Abstract

This paper analyzes the joint effect of product and international diversification strategies on firm performance, taking into account the economic cycle. The empirical analysis is conducted on a representative sample of Spanish manufacturing firms from 1994 to 2014. Our study reveals that both corporate development strategies lead to better performance during the period of economic growth when the international expansion strategy is combined with moderate levels of product diversification (related). Alternatively, when companies opt for high levels of product diversification (unrelated), the combination with an international expansion strategy just leads to better performance during the period of economic growth.
