Abstract

We study the export development process of Spanish manufacturing firms. We interpret such process as a sequential path which allows us to differentiate the following chronology: I) pre-engagement phase II) initial phase, and III) advanced phase. This study explores the questions of when firms decide to switch from one phase to another and what factors can accelerate/decelerate such decision. Obtaining product or process innovations is the most significant motivation for an early entry in initial and advanced phases of the process. Results also show that family influence is related to a delay in the internationalization process of the firm.
