Abstract

In this study we examine the relationship between policy connections in Spanish firms and corporate innovation. We use two measures of innovation: investment in R&D and the number of patents registered. Our results show that politically connected firms invest less in R&D. However, political connections are positively associated with the number of patents. Thus, although political connections reduce the amount of resources devoted to R&D activities, they increase the effectiveness of such investment. We also find that political connections attenuate the impact of political uncertainty on innovation.
