Beliefs of university students’ of the state of Chihuahua about English Learning
Keywords:

Students’ beliefs about learning a language influence their expectations, opinions and motivation, thus facilitating or inhibiting the language acquisition process. This study describes and analyzes the beliefs about English learning of 261 students that are in the sixth semester of the bachelor’s degree in elementary education or preschool education, who attend one of the three normal schools of the state of Chihuahua, in Mexico. The study uses the quantitative approach and a non-experimental design with a longitudinal approximation study, by employing the survey method and the BALLI instrument (Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory) created by Horwitz. The results show that students value practice and repetition in order to learn the second language. Also, they think that grammar and vocabulary are important, and give a greater weight to being exposed to the language rather than the cultural aspects of it.
