Résumé

La nouvelle Heart of Darkness (Joseph Conrad, 1899) traite de la brutalité de la colonisation européenne en Afrique. Son adaptation cinématographique Apocalypse Now (1979) dépeint les pratiques radicales de l'armée américaine pendant la guerre du Vietnam. Une étude comparative des relations de pouvoir dans les deux œuvres aidera à comprendre comment le pouvoir fonctionne dans des circonstances sociopolitiques extrêmes. Cet article analyse ces deux produits culturels dans le cadre théorique des textes de Michel Foucault sur le pouvoir. Trois noyaux conceptuels d'où émanent les relations de pouvoir sont examinés indépendamment : l'impérialisme et la résistance qui en résulte, les hiérarchies internes des organisations coloniales et le rôle du genre. Cette analyse montre que le pouvoir absolu est intolérable, que la mort est sa limite ultime et que la confession est son principal mécanisme de libération.

Arturo Mora-Rioja est titulaire d'un doctorat en philologie anglaise de l'UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) et est professeur associé à la KEA (Københavns Erhvervsakadem) au Danemark. Ses principaux domaines d'intérêt sont la littérature anglaise et américaine, la théorie narrative, les théories de l'adaptation et de l'appropriation, les études culturelles et la relation entre la musique et la littérature, en particulier les études sur le metal studies et le jazz studies.
