Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The paper submitted to 'Philologica Canariensia' is original and not previously published, either in whole or in part.
  • The manuscript is not under consideration elsewhere.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word format.
  • The manuscript is 1.5 line spacing; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with DOI or URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the "Author Guidelines", which is found in “About the Journal”.
  • Whenever possible, the DOI or, failing that, the URL addresses of the references have been provided.
  • The submitted paper does not contain personal identification or institutional affiliation data.
  • The authors have read and accepted the "Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement" of the journal and promise to uphold and abide by its terms.

Author Guidelines

Philologica Canariensia publishes articles, notes, and book reviews in English, Spanish, and French. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically through the application enabled at Register/Login. They must be original and not have been previously published, either in whole or in part. They must not be under consideration elsewhere.

Submissions they must use gender-inclusive language. For this purpose, see the Guidelines for the Non-Sexist Use of Language. Likewise, authors of papers using research data that include the sex variable are recommended to report on whether the conclusions have taken into account possible sex differences.

1.- The maximum length of articles (both those published in the miscellaneous section and those appearing in the monographic section) is 8,500 words, including footnotes and bibliography. Articles must be original research, not previously published.

2.- Notes (short articles) should not exceed 3,500 words, including footnotes and bibliography. They must be original research, not previously published.

3.- Book reviews should have a maximum length of 2,000 words. The journal only accepts reviews of books published within the last two years.

4.- Authors should send a Word document. The body of the text should be in Times New Roman 12 pt, whereas the footnotes and bibliography must be in Times New Roman 10 pt.

5.- Use 1.5 space between the lines everywhere in the article, including notes and bibliography. All page margins should be 2.5 cm.

6.- All submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter with the following information: author's name, affiliation, email address, highest academic degree, brief biographical sketch not exceeding 120 words, ORCID iD if applicable, and the source of funding if any. See Funding Source Statement.

7.- In the case of co-authored papers, the authors should report on the criteria chosen to decide the order of the signature and on the specific contribution made by each of them to the published work.

8.- Lowercase should be used for the title of the article. The title must be clear and precise. It should neither be too long nor too general. In addition, it should be translated into the other two languages of the journal.  

9.- Articles and notes must be accompanied by an abstract not exceeding 120 words and a list of five keywords. Abstracts and keywords should be in both English, Spanish, and French.

10.-The abstract will include information on the article's aim, methodology, main contribution, and results.

11.- Keywords must provide a clear summary of the content.

12.- Authors must omit all personal identifying information from the manuscript, as this information will be removed for peer review.

13.- Section headings should be in small caps and numbered.

14.- All articles and notes should include the following sections: introduction, body (which may include several sections and subsections), and conclusion.

15.- The words and expressions which are to be studied must be written in italics. The same instructions apply in the case of foreign words and expressions, and with book and journal titles.

16.- Short quotes (no longer than 4 typed lines) should go in inverted commas in the body of the text. Long quotes should be separated from the text and no inverted commas should be used.

17.- Simple inverted commas should be used to indicate the meaning of certain words, to call the reader’s attention on an unusual or new technical term, to translate foreign words, or to highlight the peculiar meaning of a term used in the text.

18.- Footnotes will be used to add extra information related to the content of the article.

19.- Citations must be placed in parentheses within the body of the text (Samper Padilla, 2011, pp. 98-99). If there is more than one work published by the same author in the same year, then add a letter to indicate it, e.g., (Trapero, 2015a, p. 3).

20.- Tables, figures, and their accompanying captions must be centred on the page and numbered consecutively. The text font is Times New Roman, 10 pt. Do not use boldface or italics.

21.- Place tables, figures, and illustrations near to their first mention in the text, not at the end of the article.

22.- If the submission contains material protected by copyright, authors will send to the journal's email address (philologica@ulpgc.es) a signed document where the copyright owner(s) authorize the author to reproduce the material.

23.- All articles and notes will include at the end a list of alphabetically arranged bibliographical references.

24.- Authors should follow the APA style guidelines (7th edition) both for in-text citations and for the list of references. See full guidelines.

Corrected proofs:

25.- Proofs will be sent to the author's email address. Authors must read the proofs carefully and send all changes and corrections to the journal's email address (philologica@ulpgc.es) within the next fifteen days.

26.- In the proof correction stage, authors should correct all possible linguistic and formatting errors. No important changes should be made at this stage, except if the Editor agrees to include them.

Articles

This section is of a miscellaneous scope, and invites original unpublished scientific papers that aim to divulge research results. The maximum length of articles is 8,500 words, including footnotes and bibliography. Philologica Canariensia does not publish articles of an informative nature. All contributions must be accompanied by an abstract in English, Spanish, and French not exceeding 120 words and a list of five keywords. Submissions are peer-reviewed, and this is an open and indexed section.

Notes

This is a miscellaneous section devoted to the publication of original unedited articles of a shorter length not exceeding 3,500 words, including the footnotes and final bibliography. They should be of a scientific nature and will communicate research results. The journal does not publish notes of an informative nature. All contributions must be accompanied by an abstract in English, Spanish, and French not exceeding 120 words and a list of five keywords. Submissions are peer-reviewed, and this is an open and indexed section.

Monographic Dossier

Apart from the previous sections, Philologica Canariensia may also consider including a dossier focusing on a specific subject linked to Philology or other related areas, at the request of one or more researchers external to the journal and to the ULPGC, who will assume the role of coordinators. The person or persons in charge of coordinating this section should also write the presentation text. Proposals will be emailed to philologica@ulpgc.es for assessment and will contain the following information:

1.- Provisional title of the monographic dossier.

2.- Complete curriculum vitae of the coordinator(s) (a maximum of two are allowed).

3.- Description of the objectives and thematic scope of the dossier.

4.- Provisional list of participants in this section and their affiliations, as well as the title of their papers.

Proposals will be considered by the Editorial Board of the journal within a maximum period of one month from the date of receipt. Once the monographic dossier has been accepted, articles will be submitted using the OJS application available for this purpose at Register/Login, or sent to the e-mail address philologica@ulpgc.es as attachments. Papers submitted for publication in this special section should be original research that advances knowledge in any of the areas covered by the journal. As in the case of contributions to the permanent sections, these papers must also be submitted in accordance with the guidelines for contributors and will be subjected to a strict peer review process to ensure rigour, novelty, and consistency in the academic results. The maximum length of the works for the dossiers is identical to that of the articles section. Papers must be accompanied by an abstract in English, Spanish, and French not exceeding 120 words and a list of five keywords. This section is restricted to invited authors and is indexed. In addition, it must be composed of a minimum of six and a maximum of ten articles.

In those volumes that include a monographic section, articles on various topics will be shown under the heading Miscellany.

Miscellany

This section includes articles on a variety of topics in those volumes of the journal with a monographic dossier.
