Abstract

This paper studies the structure in which negation precedes a participle, following the scheme <no + participle>; specifically, we establish the conditions under which that sequence is possible. We argue that there are two requirements that determine the possibility of having that construction: on the one hand, the participle must contain verbal structure and, specifically, the projection corresponding to the causative subevent; on the other hand, negation must not interfere between the heads that form the participle. The second condition allows us to understand why <no + participle> is possible in the nominal domain, but not in verbal periphrases. The first one accounts for the fact that not all participial forms that modify a noun accept the anteposition of no.

Author Biographies

Antonio Fábregas, Norges teknisk-naturvetenskapliga universitet (NTNU)

Fábregas holds a PhD in theoretical linguistics and its applications from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2005). Between 2007 and 2023 he was associated with the Universitetet i Tromsø, and since 2023 he belongs to the Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU). He has been a professor of Hispanic linguistics since 2010 and his research focuses on the analysis of phenomena traditionally called “morphology” from syntax, phonology and formal semantics. He is the author of eight monographs, including Morphology: From Data to Theories (2012, with Sergio Scalise), Morphologically Complex Adjectives in Spanish (2020), Spanish Verbalisations and the Internal Structure of Lexical Predicates (2022), The Fine-Structure of the Lexical Area (2024) and Diccionario de afijos del español contemporáneo (2024).

Raquel González Rodríguez, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

González Rodríguez holds a PhD from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She is currently and currently Associate Professor of Spanish Language at the same university. Her research focuses on the syntax and semantics of Spanish and, in particular, on negation, quantification, and aspectual properties of predicates. She has published numerous articles and book chapters in journals such as Natural Language & Linguistic Theory, Onomázein, Catalan Journal of Linguistics, Verba, ELUA... and in publishing houses such as John Benjamins, Akal, Visor, Routledge... She is also the author of La expresión de la afirmación y la negación (2009) and La negación en contraste (2022), the latter book co-authored with Cristina Sánchez López.
